My Weekend Project

Hi all,

We have been very busy here in the Ricker household...Summer Stuff. I have not been able to do much crafting lately but I did manage to Paint something for my Craft Room. I LOVE old Cabinets so when my Dad was giving this one away I couldn't help myself.

I am pretty sure that it is an old computer punch card filing cabinet. So I got Ron to bring it home for me and I set to work. I cleaned it up and primed it.

I had decided that pink and brown checker board was in order. I am in love with that color combination lately. Plus the fact that all my other storage item in the craft room are office standard beige and gray. I decided I needed some color.

After it was done we moved right into place in the room now I need to find time to fill it with all the great things I have been collecting.

As I was sitting at my camp site this past weekend, I thought about what I would post next. I am still at the point in my posts where I am still telling you about my Crafting challenge. So I guess I will move on to the next project I did. It was an Altered Box project, A Friendship Box, for one of my best friend's Jori. Her birthday was coming up and I wanted to do something to commemorate our 30+ years of friendship.

1. I started with a small jewelery gift box and painted the out side of it. I then created a 2 flowers the the years of friendship on each pedal.


2. I then moved to the inside of the box. I made the leaves again on the computer, then covered the rest of the box with some paper I had.
3. I started working on the inside of the box, I created a pull out book (Fanning the Paper). I went through some things I had, year books, old notes (Yes I still have every note that my friends wrote me), and searched the Internet for friendship quotes.


4. I scanned and printed all my memorabilia and the quotes.

5. I created pockets on the front of my book and created tags with my memories and quotes to slide in.I do have to say I was pretty happy with this piece (which rarely happens). I was also proud that I stuck to my challenge of not buying anything, Everything I used I had.

I couldn't wait till Jori's birthday so one day when she was not having the best of days I brought it to her. She love it.

So on January 26 2007 as I organized my craft room for the 100th time, putting everything into labeled bins, in alphabetical order. I decided enough was enough, I have to use some of this stuff up.

I had been reading about and looking at alot of Altered art. So I decided I would give it a try, but I had KNOW IDEA even where to start, then I remembered seeing these book boxes in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion Magazine so I studied them and did some more research on the topic and decided this would be my first Altered Art project.

I had some old book that were missing pages and pretty beat up so I gathered what I thought I would need, glue, paint brushes, and other odds and ends. I learned very quickly the technique. You DO NOT glue individual pages (They wrinkle and don't lay smooth) You glue the edges. Also a sharp exacto knife is key.

Okay so here we go....My first blog posting.

I set this account up 6 months ago( More on that in awhile) and I am finally ready to do this.

As far back as I can remember I have always been doing some sort of crafting/art. I used to sit in my front lawn when I was younger and draw. I would have the whole setup, I'd get a lawn chair, my drawing pad, crayons, and a some kool aide. I would sit and draw what I saw in front of me or in my imagination. I was not the greatest artist but there was something about the processes that I loved and still do. I am a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and loved when we would do crafts weather it was boon doogle or making Photo albums. I loved art class in School but never took an art class after 8th grade (this I wish I would have done differently). In my adult life as a crafter I have done everything from Quilling to Painting to Traditional Scrapbooking. All this has lead me to the here and now and why I wanted to start this blog 6 months ago. After all these years of doing all of these crafts I found that I have ALOT of stuff, so after reading other peoples blogs and a few books on Altered art, ATC's, and other great projects, I decided to give my self a challenge...

BUY NOTHING FOR MONTHS (Accept adhesives).

I wanted to see what my imagination and creativity could come up with. And I have to say I have really surprised myself. In future posting I will share what I came up with and would love your comments.
